Boundaries are not “Rules” or “Walls” - Update_Aug_2006
Using boundaries is a natural and normal activity. Developing good boundaries is also part of growing your own self-awareness and self empowerment. One of the main reasons people don't do this already is because no one taught them how or gave them any examples to follow. If you grew up in a family environment where there were few if any boundaries, it is more than likely that you won't really know what these things are. It's always harder to try something new if we feel we have no idea of how to do it. It's even harder if we tried to do it as a child and failed, even though the reason it didn't work might not have been our fault.
Another reason is that as a child most of us were told that it was wrong, selfish, or shameful to be assertive or have our own boundaries. Many of us were severely punished for daring to try to set a boundary. That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you having strong boundaries. It's just another example of the same situation we've talked about before, in our society most people don't want a kid to feel self-empowered or to be self-aware. Click here to read the whole article
A fable about the Characters in your
inner Village and How Awareness Grows -
This is a story about a boy and a girl who live in a
small village. Even though they were both in their late teens they had never
met. But there were some things they had in common.
For a start the each of them kept noticing how people in their
village found it hard to deal with life and its day-to-day
problems.
So much of what went on in the village was more complicated than it should have
been. The boy and the girl each wondered why and wished there was something they
could do to help.
For example, many of the people who
lived in the village got really worked up if things went wrong or if somebody
didn't agree with them. They found it hard to see things clearly. To limit their
confusion they usually did the same job the same way,
day
after day, rather than trying anything new or different. It's true that
repeating the same old pattern got the
usual
results just as they expected. But
all too often those results didn’t work as well as people
would have liked.
What's this got to do with you and me and our self-awareness? - As this fable explains it's often like this with aspects of our daily lives when they are handled by our "inner villagers". (click here for the rest of the story) As the boy and the girl begin climbing up Awareness Hill behind the village so much starts to become clear for the first time.
Choosing between personal and Impersonal channels (updated 6 December 2004) Everybody has a choice as to whether they communicate through their personal or impersonal channels. And everyone needs to know how to use each one at different times. It’s equally important to know when not to use each channel. Usually we switch automatically and this can lead to problems. Or we can get stuck on one channel not knowing how to switch to the other. Learning to use both channels consciously is not difficult.
Rules
for the School of Life -
(Revised
28 November 2004)
1.
You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called Life.
Each day you will have the opportunity to learn lessons. You may like the
lessons or think your assignments are stupid and irrelevant but each one has a
purpose that is special for you.
2.
An assignment will be repeated until you have learned that lesson. Do
you find yourself experiencing the same (unpleasant) event again and
again? One of your current learning projects is to discover whatever you need to
do so it either stops happening or no longer affects you . There are another 9

The fable of the Two
Explorers (Revised
14 November 2004)
Once there was a small band explorers who discovered a wonderful new
land peopled by a number of fascinating tribes which they named the "inner
villagers". In time they learned the language of the inner villagers and
were able to dialogue with them. From this they learned much about the
land itself, the habits of the tribes and what went on in each of the
local inner villages that made up the territory.
Bottom line issues
(posted 22 August 2004)
One of the reasons for interviewing your inner
protector characters (inner selves) is to learn from them about your bottom line
or life issues and to be able to distinguish these from what may seem
important but which turn out to be only symptoms pointing to the real
issues.
Identifying a life issue starts when you notice a group of similar and
repetitive problem patterns. You or someone you know keeps experiencing
these same patterns again and again through life. If it's a bottom line
issue it will keep coming up in different ways, in your conversation, how
you see other people, what irritates you in others, what you like in other
people. It will usually stand out in the kind of work you do and how you
like that work, the kind of films you enjoy, how you like to relax.
Whatever you do, wherever you go there it is again. That's a life issue.
Your most powerful "life issues"
are related to the problems that worry you most, but they may also be
involved in some of your best solutions.
Addictive
cycles - over medication and vulnerability
(posted Aug 10 2004)
It is normal for people to try to reduce their pain and
emotional pain is no exception. A person experiencing deep emotional
wounding or anxiety is extremely vulnerable and will do whatever they can
to block it. When the helpful protector characters in your inner village
(inner selves) run out of ways to reduce the pain and can no longer
provide protection, the next thing is to try substances or processes from
outside the village. At first these often seem to work almost
miraculously, so the process is repeated more and more often. But sooner
or later the treatment starts to lose its effectiveness.
"Is
it really safe for me to change?" Please
read this page first -
Making changes in your life using the methods described in these pages is great
,but only if you are ready to change. And that includes self assurance about
change itself. It's better not to make changes until you feel really confident
about them and their effect on your life. The methods we describe here do
work, but the changes can be fast and powerful. It's important to understand
what is going to happen before you begin. Then you can change with confidence.

Four levels of Self Awareness and self empowerment
Our alternative approach ....................
Our
Growing
Awareness 2007 story-telling approach
as explained on this website is based very closely on Hal and Sidra Stone's Psychology
of the Selves (and voice dialogue).
The process (if you are familiar with "voice dialogue") is
still voice dialogue. The difference is in the way we
explain it. We follow an
alternative, more down to earth, storytelling path to
describe what is happening.
It's an experiment to see if there is a less complicated way to explain
and simplify
self-awareness work so people can use
it more easily and get results sooner.
You'll notice that these new articles use different (non-technical) almost child-like terms to describe the process you already know as "voice dialogue".
We are finding this storytelling approach
also helps people
feel safer about using inner self awareness to understand what their
inner selves are doing and how and why they are do it. What is
exciting is the way it is producing observable results (longer
lasting and
more effective changes) as explained in the new pages (listed as links)
below.
Keep in mind that process is still the same - only the description
has changed. And that's
what the experiment is about.
For example, we use lots of fables, metaphor, parables, imagery, analogies,
that is easy to visualise,
non-psychological descriptions to help people get started on their climb
towards self awareness and begin making changes in their lives.
Some people even refer to it as the "Harry Potter and the Hobbits
approach to Self-Awareness"
It seems to work anyway, whether you call it "voice dialogue " or try the more every-day terms we are experimenting with. We know that other people around the world are also trying similar alternative approaches. If you are reading this and would like to make contact please e-mail us: nutting@growingaware.com.au

1. Normal Multiple Personalty states in Contrast with Dissociative Identity Disorder. There is a very significant difference between having many different inner selves or personality states within us (which can be normal and healthy or can cause some problems) and DID or Dissociative Identity Disorder (which used to be known as "Multiple Personality Disorder".) Media presenters often fail to appreciate this when they talk about personality issues. In fact they even tend to confuse DID or Dissociative Identity Disorder with Schizophrenia.
